Dr. paul farmer, co-founder of partners in health

“The Abundance Project both exemplifies and extends the work of this department,” said Paul E. Farmer, MD, PhD, co-founder of Partners In Health, chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine and chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. “Since the Department’s inception–and since many of us, including Stephen Kahn, were medical students–we have been building a model of integrated research, teaching and service for global health delivery. The teaching and training of local clinicians that will be supported by this project is an important part of that model, as is the delivery of high-quality care in resource poor settings. The opportunities created for Abundance Project scholars and fellows at HMS will have a profound influence on the direction of their research and clinical careers and on the way global health is taught.”

“We are proud to be a partner in the Abundance Project for Global Health,” said Jeffrey S. Flier, MD, dean of HMS. “Our students have a great hunger to alleviate human suffering in the areas of the world that are most in need, and this project will significantly strengthen our ability to educate and inspire future generations of global health leaders.” The Harvard Medical School portion of the project is housed in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, a multidisciplinary department that conducts social-science research and provides clinical expertise throughout the developing world.

“Stephen Kahn and the Abundance Foundation responded with urgency to the dire unmet needs of adolescent girls in Haiti. They shared our vision to empower and protect adolescent girls, and generated momentum for this ground-breaking initiative with a grant of seed funds for Haitian NGOs and to support the development of young women leaders. We are very grateful for their early support and commitment.”

Abundance Foundation Launches New Initiatives at 2011 Clinton Global Initiative
Sept 2011

The Abundance Foundation is responding to the crisis in the Horn of Africa by strengthening sustainable food systems through a grant of $50,000 and pledge of an additional $50,000 as a 1:1 challenge grant for the FEED Africa Emergency Fund. This project is conducted in partnership with the FEED Foundation, whose co-founder, Lauren Bush Lauren explains, "this Fund will provide emergency nutrition, support grassroots groups, and work towards the goal of long-term food security while ensuring that 100% of all funds go to organizations working on the ground in East Africa."

The Abundance Project for Global Health was featured via video at the Clinton Global Initiative session on "Securing Global Nutrition," moderated by Nicholas Kristof.

The Abundance Foundation's ongoing Clinton Global Initiative Commitment is now being expanded to include participation in a Family Medicine Residency and Nurse Training program in St. Marc, Haiti. Working with Partners In Health and Harvard Medical School, this project is nearly tripling the physician and nurse staffing at Hospital St. Nicholas. This is the only major public hospital serving the Lower Artibonite region, the epicenter of the Haitian cholera outbreak.

The Abundance Foundation has initiated a collaboration with Zach Niles, director of Sierra Leone's Refugee All-Stars, to produce Lakou Mizik, a film exploring Haitian culture and resilience through the music and stories of local musicians. The Abundance Foundation's previous film, Haiti's Heroes, premiered at the 2010 Clinton Global Initiative, and highlights the central role of local practitioners in solving Haiti's most challenging health crises. Dr. Stephen Kahn, founder of the Abundance Foundation, believes "art has the power to illuminate social justice issues, make visible the invisible, and permit the deepest expression of the personal effects of injustice, war, and disaster."

By investing at the intersection of Global Health, Youth & Female Empowerment, and Art as Social Justice the Abundance Foundation is transforming community systems to support healthy individuals. The Abundance Foundation is partnering with visionaries to transform scarcity into abundance.

28 Oct 2010

Harvard Medical School, in partnership with the Abundance Foundation, Partners In Health and the Global Health Delivery Program, announces the launch of the Abundance Project for Global Health. This partnership empowers local health care workers in Haiti and Rwanda and trains a new generation of health care providers. A seed gift from the Abundance Foundation was committed through the Clinton Global Initiative to create the Abundance Project for Global Health. The Project will support networks of clinicians, medical researchers, and teachers caring for resource-poor communities.

Stephen Kahn, MD, president of the Abundance Foundation and graduate of HMS, announced a commitment of over $1 million at the Clinton Global Initiative meeting in September. “The Abundance Foundation is committed to improving global health by strengthening medical education and health systems,” Kahn said.
